In a swarm of hit and misses for the 2016 Summer blockbuster season, Star Trek Beyond quietly but surely surges to the top of what the season has to offer. Beyond, the 13th in the ever ageless franchise brings the reboot series another well oiled addition. <br/><br/>Positives: <br/><br/>DIRECTING - New comer to the franchise Justin Lin brings his Fast and Furious expertise and shows them off incredibly well. He hits the mark on most occasions, showcasing he understands the source material well without diverting it away from what made the franchise iconic. <br/><br/>ACTING - All actors involved play their part with expert precision, what makes the film so much enjoyable is seeing supporting characters received increased screen time over previous installments. <br/><br/>SCRIPT - Simon and Doug&#39;s script is well written and adds smart character humour that makes character banter all the more fun to watch. <br/><br/>TECHNICAL FEATS - From the films perfect score to its dazzling special effects, the films Audio/Visual qualities are top notch. <br/><br/>Negatives: <br/><br/>STORYLINE - Whilst exciting 1st and 3rd acts are fun to behold it is quite pedestrian in its ambitions particularly the films 2nd act which slows the film down. The film does feel like a 2 hour TV film due to it&#39;s structure. <br/><br/>PREDICTABILITY - There were times where it became easy to read where the film was heading and how problems were going to be resolved. <br/><br/>Film Highlight - The Enterprises deterioration and Krull&#39;s entrance<br/><br/>Film Lowlight - Sluggish second act<br/><br/>What could have made the film better - Krull makes an impressive entrance to the film and really brings an energetic kick to the scene playing around him. But with most villains in cinema these day (see a good chunk of the Marvel Cinematic Universe villains for reference) he is no Darth Vadar/ Voldemort/ The Joker. Which is a shame as he fits perfectly into the Star Trek canon of Villains. A little more fleshing out and he would stand out from the crowd contending to enter into the same league as the ones listed above. <br/><br/>In Conclusion: With so many intended blockbuster failing to impress this season, the latest Star Trek films flies from the beyond bringing with it a much-needed-tent-pole-franchise-boost to your local cinema. It&#39;s a well executed film that will satisfy all that associate the Star Trek brand as high quality entertainment.
Star Trek Beyond is an exciting, intelligent, action film. It has great acting and great special effects. It tells the story of a dangerous new enemy and once again, Captain Jim Kirk and Co. must save the day. I found the story, action and acting kept me hooked for the entire film and as usual there were the humorous moments long now associated with all Star Trek films. The look and feel of Beyond is exactly what you&#39;d expect since the franchise rebooted and there is a crispness about it. Chris Pine is superb again and Zac Quinto is equally as good. If you liked the previous two films in the franchise then you will like this one too. If you have not seen the previous two, then you&#39;re in for a treat if you like smart sci-fi with intelligent plot twists and awesome action!! Another great addition to the franchise and it had enough thrills to warrant a very well earned 8 out of ten.
While Beyond won't unseat 1982's thrilling The Wrath of Khan as the gold standard for Star Trek movies, it's a highly entertaining entry guaranteed to give the franchise continuing life.

The adversary Krall is ultimately identified as a deformed Balthazer M. Edison, captain of the U.S.S. Franklin, a ship that, according to Scotty, disappeared without a trace in 2164, shortly after the foundation of the Federation of Planets. Krall/Edison is also identified as a former M.A.C.O. (Starfleet Marines), and mentions fighting during the Xindi War (2153-2154) as well as the Romulan-Earth Wars (2156-2160). Especially the mentioning of the Xindi War is interesting, because this places him directly on board the Enterprise NX-01, during the events of the third season of <a href="/title/tt0244365/">Enterprise (2001)</a>. He later states that he became disillusioned when the Federation was founded, and there was no apparent need for soldiers anymore. He received command of the U.S.S. Franklin in recognition of his services for Starfleet, and later disappeared. Some viewers have noted that this does not seem to fit in the official Star Trek timeline. If Edison received command of a ship after the Romulan Wars, how could it be a warp 4 ship? By the time the wars had ended, the Enterprise NX-01 and the Columbia NX-02 had already been flying with warp 5 engines for many years. So this is a potential error on the part of the writers of Star Trek Beyond.<br/><br/>However, there is a fitting explanation for this. According to the Star Trek timeline, warp 2.5 was achieved in 2142, and warp 3 in 2145. Since we know that the Enterprise NX-01 launched with an experimental warp 5 engine in 2151, the prototype warp-4 vessel U.S.S. Franklin must have been built somewhere in the late 2140s. This is sustained by several other observations: the ship is very close in design and size to the Enterprise NX-02 (relatively flat with the nacelles almost directly attached to the saucer section), it has transporters that were only used for cargo (Enterprise NX-01 was the first with a transporter that could also transport humans), and it still has conventional torpedoes for weapons (Enterprise NX-01 started out with these, but soon switched to photon torpedoes). So the U.S.S. Franklin must have been used as a cargo ship long before Edison received command of it. By that time, it must have been at least 11 years old, capable of only warp 4 and without transporters for personal transfer. Since Edison was already upset about losing his job as a MACO, being offered an obsolete ship may have added to his frustration.
